Loft Conversion Staircase Options: A Complete Guide

The staircase to your new loft room is a critical element of any conversion. It needs to be safe, comply with Building Regulations, and ideally look good — all while taking up as little floor space as possible on the floor below. Here are your options.

Space-Saving Staircases

Most loft conversion staircases are 'space-saving' designs — steeper than a standard staircase, with alternating treads or paddle steps, and a handrail on both sides. They comply with Building Regulations for loft staircases, which allow a steeper angle than ground-to-first-floor stairs. These are typically 600–800mm wide.

Standard Straight Staircase

Where floor space allows, a standard straight staircase is the most comfortable and conventional option. This usually requires taking a portion of a bedroom or landing on the floor below to accommodate the stair run. It's the most expensive option but creates the most accessible and saleable loft room.

Quarter-Turn and Half-Turn Staircases

Quarter-turn (L-shaped) and half-turn (U-shaped) staircases are popular where a straight run isn't possible. They turn through 90 or 180 degrees, allowing the staircase to fit into a more compact area. These are more expensive to build but often the best solution in typical three-bedroom Essex semis.

Building Regulations for Loft Staircases

Loft conversion staircases have their own set of Building Regulations: the pitch can be up to 42 degrees (steeper than standard stairs); minimum headroom is 1.8m (measured vertically from the stair nosing); minimum width is 600mm for alternating tread stairs. All our staircases are designed and installed to meet these requirements.
