What Are Permitted Development Rights?

For loft conversions, permitted development allows you to add up to 40 cubic metres of additional roof space (50 cubic metres for detached and semi-detached houses) without formal planning consent — subject to certain design conditions.
When Do You Need Planning Permission?
You'll need full planning permission if: your property is in a Conservation Area or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; your home is a listed building; the conversion would exceed the volume limits above; the dormer would face the front of the property; or your local authority has removed permitted development rights through an Article 4 Direction.
